Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, and it starts at a multiple of the standard plans. For the right business it's worth every cent; for most, it's a solution to problems they don't have yet. Here's how to know which camp you're in.
What you actually get with Plus
- Checkout customisation — the big one. Standard Shopify locks the checkout; Plus lets you customise it with checkout extensions, which matters for complex upsells and B2B.
- Higher limits — more staff accounts, more storefronts/markets, and API capacity for high volume.
- Automation — Shopify Flow and Launchpad for scheduled sales and back-office automation.
- B2B / wholesale features built in.
- Lower credit-card rates at volume, and dedicated support.
You can see the current feature set on Shopify's Plus page. The honest summary: Plus is about scale, control and complexity — not about making a small store convert better.
Signs you've genuinely outgrown standard Shopify
- 01You're doing serious revenue and the lower transaction rates alone would offset the fee.
- 02You need to customise the checkout (bespoke upsells, B2B rules, custom fields).
- 03You run multiple brands, regions or currencies from one back office.
- 04Your traffic spikes (big drops, flash sales) are testing the limits of your current plan.
Our take
Stay on standard Shopify until a specific Plus feature — almost always checkout customisation or multi-storefront — is blocking real revenue. Until then, your money is far better spent on speed, conversion and ads. When you do outgrow it, the move to Plus is smooth and nothing has to break.
Not sure what your store actually needs? We'll tell you straight — no upsell to a plan you don't need.
