Shopify Checkout Optimization: Turn More Carts Into Orders
Most carts die at checkout for predictable reasons. Here is how to reduce friction, use Shop Pay and accelerated checkouts well, and recover the ones that still slip.

You spent money and effort getting a shopper to add to cart — and then nearly seven in ten of them leave before paying. Baymard Institute, which has tracked this for years, puts the average cart abandonment rate around 70%. The checkout is where you win those back.
Why carts die at checkout
Baymard's research into the reasons is remarkably consistent year after year. The top causes are almost all avoidable:
| Reason for abandoning | Roughly how often | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected extra costs (shipping, tax, fees) | ~48% | Show costs early; offer free-shipping thresholds |
| Had to create an account | ~24% | Offer guest checkout |
| Checkout too long or complex | ~22% | Fewer fields, clear steps |
| Couldn't see total cost up front | ~17% | Running order summary |
| Didn't trust the site with card details | ~18% | Trust signals, recognised payment logos |
Reduce the friction
- Surface shipping before checkout. A shipping estimator or a clear free-shipping threshold on the cart kills the number-one abandonment reason.
- Allow guest checkout. Forcing account creation is pure friction for a first-time buyer.
- Cut the fields. Every optional field you remove lifts completion. Use address autocomplete.
- Keep the total visible at every step so there are no surprises on the final screen.
Use Shopify's accelerated checkouts
Shopify's own data shows Shop Pay converts meaningfully higher than a standard checkout, because returning shoppers skip the form entirely. Enable Shop Pay and the one-tap wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) — for mobile buyers, a saved wallet is often the difference between an order and an abandoned cart. (On Shopify Plus you can also customise the checkout itself — see our Shopify vs Shopify Plus guide.)
Recover the ones that still slip
- Abandoned-checkout emails — a short series, the first within an hour, recovers a real share of lost carts.
- Retargeting the specific product they left, not a generic brand ad.
- A persistent cart so their items are still there when they come back on another device.
