Shopify vs WooCommerce

Shopify and WooCommerce are the two most popular ways to run an online store, and the “which is better” debate usually misses the point. They are built for different people. Here is the comparison that actually helps you choose.

Where Shopify wins

  • Everything is handled — hosting, security, updates, PCI compliance, checkout. You focus on selling.
  • Checkout that converts. Shopify's checkout and Shop Pay are among the highest-converting in ecommerce, and you can't easily replicate that on WooCommerce.
  • Reliability at scale — flash sales and traffic spikes don't take the store down.
  • Speed out of the box — a well-built Shopify theme is fast without you managing a server.

Where WooCommerce wins

  • Total control — it's open source, so anything is possible if you have the skills (or budget).
  • Content-first sites — if your store is really a blog or media site with a shop attached, WordPress is a natural home.
  • No transaction fees on the platform itself (though you'll pay for hosting, plugins and maintenance).

Our take

For the vast majority of merchants — anyone who wants to sell rather than run a web server — Shopify is the right call. It is faster to launch, cheaper to maintain in practice, and its checkout simply converts better. WooCommerce earns its place for developers, agencies and content-led businesses that need total control and have the resources to manage it.

If you're on WooCommerce and tired of the maintenance, moving is straightforward and you don't have to lose your rankings — see migrating to Shopify without losing traffic.

Thinking about building — or moving — to Shopify? We do both.
