Most Shopify marketing fails not because a tactic is wrong, but because the tactics are done in the wrong order. Running cold ads to a store that doesn't convert, with no retention, is pouring water into a leaky bucket. Here's the order that makes every dollar compound.
Layer 1 — The foundation (fix the bucket first)
Before you spend on traffic, make sure the traffic converts and you can measure it:
- Speed and conversion. A slow or confusing store caps every ad channel. Fix Core Web Vitals and the product page first.
- Tracking. GA4, the Meta Conversions API and Google's conversion tags, all verified. You can't optimise what you can't see.
- The offer. A clear, compelling reason to buy now — this does more for ROAS than any targeting tweak.
Layer 2 — Acquisition (turn on the tap)
Now bring people in, matched to your product:
- 01Paid social (Meta) to create demand for visual and impulse products — see Meta Ads for Shopify.
- 02Paid search and Shopping (Google) to capture existing demand — see Google vs Meta.
- 03Organic and content as the slow-compounding layer underneath the paid channels.
Layer 3 — Retention (where the profit is)
Acquisition gets expensive; retention is where margin lives. A second purchase from an existing customer costs a fraction of the first. Build the retention layer and your blended returns climb even if ad costs don't:
- Email flows — welcome, abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back, running automatically.
- A reason to come back — replenishment reminders, loyalty, or simply a great unboxing. More in repeat-customer revenue.
- Retargeting that recovers the shoppers who didn't buy the first time.
We recommend most stores start with at least a few thousand a month in ad spend once the foundation is solid — enough data to optimise against, no more. Below that, fixing conversion first is almost always the better use of the money.
