When sales are slow, the reflex is a discount. It works in the short term, and it teaches buyers to wait for the next one. A bundle can lift the average order without touching the price of each item. The question is which one keeps more of your margin, and the answer depends on your costs. Here is a worked example you can adapt.
A worked example, with illustrative numbers
Take a product that sells for 50 with a cost of 20, so 30 of margin per unit. The figures below are illustrative, not from a client store, but the arithmetic is exactly what you should run for your own catalogue.
| Offer | Revenue per order | Cost per order | Margin per order |
|---|---|---|---|
| No offer, one unit | 50 | 20 | 30 |
| 10% off, one unit | 45 | 20 | 25 |
| Bundle of two at 90 total | 90 | 40 | 50 |
In this example the 10% discount costs 5 of margin on every order, while the bundle earns more total margin per order even though the customer pays less than two full-price units. The bundle only works if the buyer actually wants two. That is the test that decides everything else.
When a bundle wins
- The products are used together, such as a set, a kit or a refill pack.
- Your cost per unit falls when bought in larger quantities, which is common with packaging and shipping.
- You want to move slower stock alongside a bestseller without cutting the price of either.
When a discount is the better tool
A time-limited discount can make sense for a launch, a clearance or a one-off event, provided it is clearly time-bound. Discounts hurt when they become permanent, because the price you show becomes the price people wait for. Check your discount settings and set an end date on every promotion you run.
