How to Increase Average Order Value on Shopify (Without Discounts)

AOV is the fastest lever on your revenue because it needs no extra traffic. Here are the upsell, bundle and threshold tactics that work — and the ones that backfire.

How to raise average order value

Average order value is the most under-used lever in ecommerce. Raising it needs no extra ad spend and no extra traffic — the same visitors simply spend more. A store doing $60 average orders that gets to $75 has grown revenue 25% without acquiring a single new customer.

Threshold incentives

The simplest and most reliable tactic: give shoppers a reason to add one more item.

  • Free-shipping threshold set just above your current AOV — “You're $12 away from free shipping” is one of the most persuasive lines in ecommerce.
  • Gift with purchase above a spend level, which feels better than a discount and protects your margin.
  • Tiered discounts on quantity (“buy 2, save 10%”) for consumables and multipacks.

Upsells and cross-sells, done right

The difference between an upsell that lifts AOV and one that annoys is relevance. A random “you may also like” does nothing; the accessory that genuinely completes the purchase converts.

  1. 01On the product page: the obvious companion item (the case for the phone, the beans for the grinder).
  2. 02In the cart: a small, relevant add-on at the moment of commitment.
  3. 03Post-purchase: a one-click upsell on the thank-you page — it cannot hurt conversion because the sale is already made.

Bundles

Bundling related products into a single “set” at a modest saving raises AOV and does the shopper's thinking for them. The starter kit, the complete set, the routine — these outsell the same items listed separately because they remove decision fatigue. Shopify's native bundles and apps make this straightforward.

AOV compounds with retention: a higher first order from a customer who comes back is the foundation of a profitable store. More on that in turning one-time buyers into repeat revenue.
