Google Shopping Feed Optimization for Shopify Stores

Your product feed is the targeting. How to structure titles, fix disapprovals, use custom labels, and stop wasting spend on unprofitable products.

A homeware brand product listing

In Google Shopping you do not choose keywords. Google reads your product feed and decides which searches you appear for. That makes the feed your targeting mechanism — and most Shopify stores just sync whatever the app exports and never look again.

Product titles are the highest-leverage field

Your Shopify product title is written for your store. Your feed title should be written for search. They do not need to be the same, and usually should not be.

CategoryTitle formula
ApparelBrand + Gender + Product + Attribute + Colour + Size
ElectronicsBrand + Model + Product Type + Key Spec
HomewareBrand + Product + Material + Dimensions + Colour
ConsumablesBrand + Product + Flavour/Variant + Quantity

"Aurora Throw" becomes "Nordisk Aurora Wool Throw Blanket — 130x170cm, Charcoal Grey". The second one matches how people actually search, and Google has something to work with.

Fix your disapprovals before anything else

Disapproved products do not serve. Merchants routinely run Shopping campaigns for months with a third of their catalogue silently blocked. The usual causes:

  • Missing GTIN. Required for most branded products. Put barcodes in the variant field.
  • Price mismatch between the feed and the landing page — usually caused by currency conversion apps.
  • Missing availability or stale stock status.
  • Image with promotional overlay. Watermarks, "SALE" badges and borders are all against policy.
  • Missing required attributes for apparel: age group, gender, size, colour.

Custom labels are how you control spend

Custom labels let you segment the feed by anything you like, then bid differently per segment. This is where profitability is won.

  1. 01custom_label_0 — margin tier (high / medium / low)
  2. 02custom_label_1 — best seller / steady / slow mover
  3. 03custom_label_2 — seasonality
  4. 04custom_label_3 — price band
  5. 05custom_label_4 — clearance or full price

With those in place you can bid aggressively on high-margin best sellers and cap spend on low-margin slow movers, instead of treating a 60%-margin hero product and a 12%-margin accessory identically.

Feed quality checks worth automating

  • Every product has a GTIN or an explicit `identifier_exists: no`.
  • Descriptions over 500 characters, without HTML.
  • At least three images per product, main image on white.
  • `product_type` and `google_product_category` both populated.
  • Shipping and tax configured for every target market.

Feed titles and structured product data pull from the same underlying attributes, which is why this pairs closely with getting your product schema right.

In Shopping, the feed is the campaign. Optimising bids on a bad feed is polishing the wrong thing.
