Interaction to Next Paint on Shopify: Fixing Slow Taps, Clicks and Menus
A store can load fast and still feel sluggish when shoppers tap. Interaction to Next Paint measures that delay. Here is how to find and fix it on Shopify.

A page can look finished and still feel broken. The menu opens a second after the tap, the add-to-cart button responds late, and the shopper taps again, sometimes adding the item twice. That delay is what Google measures as Interaction to Next Paint, or INP, one of the three Core Web Vitals that feed into how your store is evaluated.
What INP actually measures
INP records the time between a shopper's interaction and the moment the screen next updates. It covers clicks, taps and key presses across the whole visit, and reports a value close to the worst interactions a shopper had. A store with fast loading can still score poorly here if its scripts keep the main thread busy whenever someone touches the page.
The usual causes on Shopify stores
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Add-to-cart responds slowly | Heavy scripts running on the product page |
| Menu opens late on phones | Large JavaScript bundles parsed before interaction |
| Filters or variant selectors lag | Whole-page re-renders on each change |
| Taps feel delayed only after an app loads | An app script running long tasks on every page |
Find the slow handler
Open the page in Chrome with the Performance panel, record while you tap the menu and add to cart, and look for long tasks that start right after the interaction. The web.dev guide to INP explains how to read the trace. Each long task points to a script or handler you can investigate, which is much faster than guessing.
Fix it in order of cost
- 01Remove scripts that run on pages where they are not needed, such as a review widget on the cart page.
- 02Defer non-essential scripts until after the first interaction or until the page is idle.
- 03Break long tasks into smaller chunks, especially in custom product and filter code.
- 04Update only the part of the page that changes, instead of redrawing the whole section on each tap.
- 05Retest on a real phone and confirm the INP score moved, not only the speed score.

INP is closely tied to the apps and custom scripts covered in our app bloat guide and the filter work in our collection filters guide. Fixing those usually fixes the responsiveness too.
If your store loads quickly but feels slow to use, we profile the taps and clicks on a real phone and fix the scripts causing the delay.
