Every week someone asks us for “the best converting Shopify theme.” The honest answer is that the theme matters less than what you do with it — but some themes give you a much better starting point than others. Here's how to choose well.
Start with Shopify's own themes
Shopify's free themes — especially the current default, Horizon, and the long-standing Dawn — are genuinely excellent. They're fast, well-maintained, accessible and built on Shopify's modern “Online Store 2.0” architecture, which means sections and blocks you can edit without touching code. For most stores, a free Shopify theme customised properly beats a random premium theme. Browse them in the Shopify Theme Store.
What actually makes a theme convert
- 01Speed. A heavy theme stuffed with animations and demo content starts you in a hole. Check the theme's own demo on PageSpeed Insights before you buy.
- 02A strong product-page template — flexible gallery, clear buy box, space for reviews and trust. This is where the sale happens.
- 03Sections and blocks so you (not a developer) can rearrange the homepage.
- 04Mobile-first layout, because most of your traffic and most of your decisions happen on a phone.
What to ignore
- The demo screenshots. Every theme looks great with a professional photographer's images and perfect copy. Yours won't start there.
- “Conversion-optimised” in the listing. It's marketing. The conversion comes from how it's set up, not the label.
- Feature count. More built-in features often means more weight and more to slow you down.
